Film and Society Module

A Kosovar actor residing in Sarajevo and a permanent member of the SARTR Theatre (Sarajevski ratni teatar) since 2008, Alban Ukaj is active in both film and theatre. Casted as the lead actor in the latest project J.A.C.E by the Greek director Menelaos Karamaghiolis, supporting role in Palme d’Or winning Lorna’s Silence, in film On the Path by the Golden Bear winning director Jasmila Žbanić, he also leads in theatre plays such as Hipermnesia by Selma Spahić, Bent by Belgrade director Andrej Nosov, Rabbit Hole by Croatian director Robert Raponja, and many others.

Alban Ukaj joined us in the third week of the fall semester, as the guest lecturer within the Film and Society Course. Following the screening of his short film Chalk-Horse, Ukaj shared his experience and approach in writing and directing this short film. As one of the cofounders of Kontakt, an association dedicated to promotion of research in theater, with a focus on engagement of marginalized groups, he discussed with our BFA and MFA students the responsability of artists towards political and social circumstances as well as the obligation to ask questions about human conditions and position of the individual in opressed society.
